An Exciting Career at Sea
You can embark on an exciting career at sea either as a Trainee Navigating Officer (TNOC) or a Trainee Marine Engineer (TME). The SCI’s direct recruitment process follows guidelines specified by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS).
You can be considered for selection to SCI as a TNOC, if you have completed your HSC with at least 60% marks in PCM as per the DGS guidelines in force at present. After completing a pre-sea training of 12 months, shipboard training of 18 months, and successfully clearing the Second Mates Certificate of Competency Examinations, you can start your career at sea as a Third Officer and work your way upwards to becoming a Master.
On the engineering side, you can be selected as a Trainee Marine Engineer to a DGS approved pre-sea training institute for 12 months. On completion of the requisite training period and after completing with other required formalities you can commence your sea career as a Fifth Engineer Officer and work your way upwards to Chief Engineer Officer.
However, the selection as both TNOC and TME is based on an entrance examination and interviews conducted by the SCI. The recruitment of TNOCs and TMEs is widely covered by employment news, leading Indian newspapers and also featured on this website.
Selected candidates would also be required to successfully undergo a medical examination as required under STCW/MS Medical Rules 2000.

SCI advertises all vacancies ashore in leading newspapers and displays the same online.
