Year 2002 – 2003

The SCI was again awarded “SHIP EMERGENCY RESPONSE SERVICE (SERS)” Award in September 2002 by the Lloyds Register of Shipping for outstanding commitment to emergency preparedness.

To achieve excellence in safety and quality management for meeting trade and customer requirements the SCI has initiated a system of recognising and presenting safety awards to deserving vessels and departments ashore found to be most SMS compliant. The awards for 2002 was announced as follows :


A) AMVER AWARDS
SCI vessels are regular recipients of Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue (AMVER) Awards from the US Coast Guards. The ‘AMVER’ system allows rescue co-ordination centres world wide to locate vessels near a ship in distress in order to divert then to render aid. As many as 19 vessel of SCI received ‘AMVER’ awards during the year 2002. Names of vessels which received the awards are listed below :

B)    Presentation of SCI ‘Fleet Safety Awards’

The concept and also the purpose of initiating presentation of ‘Fleet Safety Awards’ was to motivate, recognise and honour the employees of the vessels also departments in shore offices found to have shown excellence and maximum compliance to company’s safety management system structured as per the requirements of ISM Code. By following specified criterion and methodology, such vessels and departments were identified for the year 2001 and 2002 for presentation of awards. (See Table)

Also for greater participation and awareness, in safety related matters a slogan contest on ‘Safety’ was initialled. Nearly 400 slogan were received and name of best seven contestants were announced for awards.

Finally with much fanfare, on 16th August, 2003 a formal function was held at SCI, Maritime Training Institute, Powai, when above awards were handed over to the awardees by the Hon’ble Union Minister of Shipping Shri Shatrughan Sinha who was also the Chief Guest of the function.

Adorable exhibition of the shields and the trophies on the dais, floral decorations and display of flags gave a festive appearance to the venue. The function was set in motion with the arrival of the Hon’ble Minister. He was received by Shri P.K. Srivastava, C&MD, SCI and also by Capt. A.K. Dhir, GM (ISM). A guard of honour was presented to the Hon’ble Minister by the cadets of the Marine Engineering and Research Institute. National Anthem followed as the Hon’ble Minister and othe dignitaries entered the auditorium and reached the dais. By lighting a lamp amidst chanting of Saraswati Bandana the Minister inaugurated the function.

Later on, in his address to the gatherings, appreciating the SCI’s initiation of introducing ‘Fleet Safety Awards’ he quoted that ‘The Journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step’ and expressed hope that other industries would adopt the example of SCI and initiate such presentation to promote safety.

Earlier, in his welcome address, Capt. A.K. Dhir, GM (ISM) and DPA of SCI, after welcoming the Hon’ble Minister, other dignitaries and the audience quoted a slogan received from a seafarer who participated in slogan contest on ‘Safety’.

‘Safety is quality, quality is commitment and commitment is Attitude’.

He narrated that attitude was the core issue of any quality service. The spirit of ISM Code involved commitment to continuous improvement, he stressed. To achieve this requirement, continuous review research, training and motivation had received due priority in SCI.

Shri P.K. Srivastava, C&MD, SCI while thanking the Hon’ble Minister expressed that his presence reflected the importance the Minister personally reposed on ‘Safety in Maritime Sector’.He reiterated that SCI stood committed to build up a safety culture in the fleet and in the organisation.

The function was well attended by the dignitaries of shipping industry, representatives of various unions connected with seafarers, classification societies, media personnel seafarers and SCI Officials.

Shri G.S. Sahni, Director General of Shipping, Govt. of India and Shri A. Chatterjee, Chief Surveyor with the Govt. of India also spoke on the occasion appreciating SCI’s action in initiating ‘Fleet Safety Awards’. Capt. Sudhir Kumar a sailing master expressed that such awards will percolate concept of safety to all on board ships.

A cultural show tastefully and graciously presented to suit a function projecting ‘Safety’ was well accepted by the audience.

The function ended with vote of thanks by Shri A.K. Das, DGM (ISM).

C)    SCI conferred with ‘Safest Indian Shipping Company’ & ‘Most Compassionate Employer’ Awards during the year 2002

On the occasion of World Maritime day on 23rd Sept. 2003, The National Maritime Day celebration committee under the chairmanship of the D. G. Shipping organised  a function  and initiated presentation of  the following awards to recognise and honour the Indian shipping company and foreign employers for their sustained contribution to the cause of Indian shipping and Indian seafarers.

2.      Most Quality conscious Indian shipping company

3.      Most compassionate employer 

4.      Best foreign employer

SCI has been the proud winner of the prestigious award Safest Indian Shipping Company during the year 2002.  On behalf of SCI, this award along with a certificate of excellence for same was received by Capt. A.K. Dhir, GM (ISM) from the Chief Guest Shri M.P. Pinto, Ex- Secretary M.O.S., G.O.I. Following citation read out by the representative of D.G. Shipping during conferring above award explains the basis of such evaluation.

In the year 2002, the Shipping Corporation of India has maintained the safety standards on board their ships as per international standards and ensured the safety of men and material in a most exemplary manner, inspite of having around 4,600 seafarers and big flotilla of 126 ships.  The Shipping Corporation of India has set up an example for other Indian shipping companies.  Efforts made by their men and management is commendable.  The appreciate their untiring efforts in maintaining the safety standards, the Certificate of Excellence and the Safest Indian Shipping Company Award for 2002, is given to them, on this day, 23rd September, 2003.

The Shipping companies giving employment to Indian are not only ensuring that they are recognized all over the world as best Indian seafarers but also ensuring that if any seafarer is incapacitated due to accident on board their ship, then they are rehabilitated either by giving them employment in their organization or giving employment to their wards. In the year 2002, the Shipping Corporation of India has rehabilitated the wards of 35 seafarers, who got incapacitated and found unfit to be employed on board due to various reasons. Thus, this act has shown that they care for their employees and have a life long bond with them. This act of rehabilitating their incapacitated Indian seafarers, has earned them the Most Compassionate Employer Award for 2002. The Certificate of Excellence and Most Compassionate Employer Award for 2002, is given to them on this day, 23rd September, 2003.

Year 2001 – 2002

The Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) was awarded “SHIP EMERGENCY RESPONSE SERVICE (SERS)” Awards for outstanding commitment to emergency preparedness in November, 2001 by the Lloyds Register of Shipping. This was evaluated on the basis of performance in number and variety of exercises demonstrated with the Lloyds Register of Shipping Emergency Response Service.

Year 1999-2000:

• Star Performers' Award for 1999, which is jointly instituted by the Lloyds London Press of U.K. and M/s. Freightliner, U.K. and is presented to a shipping line that achieves the best service reliability and fastest transit times on the different trade routes from Europe. The SCI was given this award for its India-UKC Container Service.

Year 1998-99:

• The Shipping Corporation of India Ltd., (SCI) received on 17th July' 1999, the Prime Minister's Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) Award for excellence in overall corporate performance for the year 1997-98 at a function organized by Department of Public Enterprises (DPE), Ministry of Heavy Industries and & Public Enterprises, Government of India in collaboration with Standing Committee On Public Enterprise (SCOPE). The awards were given to the top 10 Public Sector Unit's selected on the basis of their composite MOU score which is a total index reflecting the performance in terms of both financial and non-financial criteria.

• The SCI was awarded the prestigious "Golden Peacock National Training Award" for the year 1997 for excellence in the field of training. The award is instituted by the National Council of the Directors, New Delhi and was presented to Shri P.K. Srivastava, Chairman & Managing Director, SCI by Shri Madanlal Khurana at New Delhi on 29.07.1998. The SCI was chosen from amongst 45 entries consisting of various training institutes from all over the country.

• Star Performers' Award for 1998-99, which is jointly instituted by the Lloyds London Press of U.K. and M/s. Freight Liners, U.K. and is presented to a shipping line that achieves the best service reliability and fastest transit times on the different trade routes from Europe. The SCI was given this award for its India-UKC Container Service.

• Some of the SCI vessels participated in the United States Coast Guard's Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue Programme (AMVER) and was awarded the AMVER Certificate of Merit for their contribution in the various rescue operations.

Year 1997-98:

• Letter of Appreciation received from M/s. ONGCL for performing the very difficult job (by the vessel MSV Samudra Suraksha) of effecting repairs (by cropping the damaged section and renewing the same) to their Heera Uran Trunk (HUT) Pipeline, a major oil supplying arteries of ONGCL which was damaged by an uncontrolled semi-submersible Rig during the 1996 cyclone.

Year 1996-97:

• Star Performers' Award for 1996 - 2nd time in succession for the fastest transit time on the South East Asia (Mumbai) route. This award, which is sponsored by Lloyds of London Press and the Port of London Authority, is presented to a shipping line for schedule reliability and fast transit time with selection done by Lloyds on the basis of a monthly survey of operations in various long haul trade routes.

• Highest throughput award for Bulk / Container Cargo at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust.

Year 1995-96:

• 1995 Star Performers' Award for achieving the fastest transit time on the South East Asia (Mumbai) route. The award sponsored by Lloyds of London Press and the Port of London Authority, is presented to a shipping line for schedule reliability and fast transit time with selection done by Lloyds on the basis of a monthly survey of operations in various long haul trade routes.

• Cash award and citation for meritorious meteorological work done by the vessels m.v. Sagar Kanya, m.v. Kabirdas and m.t. Chatrapati Shivaji.

• Certificate of Merit awarded to 28 vessels for transmitting useful meteorological observations to coastal radio stations as members of the Indian Meteorological Department voluntary observing fleet.

• Rated first for its performance by Express Investment Week for the Year 1994-95.
